We propose a model of ionic-structure transformation of Y/sub 3/Fe/sub 5/O/sub 12/ induced by fast neutron irradiation, which permits one to interpret coherently the changes in the physical properties observed recently by Podsekin and co-workers. The model is based on a mechanism of transformation of ion pairs (O/sup 2 -/-Fe/sub d//sup 3 +/) into (O/sup -/-Fe/sub d//sup 2 +/) resulting from the transfer of an electron from o/sup 2 -/ anions to the nearest-neighboring Fe/sub d//sup 3 +/ cations in tetrahedral sites. The number x of Fe/sub d//sup 3 +/ cations transformed into Fe/sub d//sup 2 +/ cations can be directly determined from magnetization measurements.
