The mechanisms of the indirect exchange interaction in ferrimagnetic compounds with garnet and spinel structures were investigated. The evaluations of the exchange parameters for such compounds were generally carried out in the framework of the nearest-neighbors approximations of molecular field theory. In order to reveal the role of these exchange interactions in the compounds under consideration, the authors performed direct calculations of the magnetic interactions with the cations in the second and third coordination spheres. The superexchange interactions in Li/sub 0.5/Fe/sub 2.5/O/sub 4/ and Y/sub 3/Fe/sub 5/O/sub 12/, in particular, are studied.
