Aqueous slurry explosives can be prepared when the aqueous slurry is thickened by a Xanthomonas hydrophilic colloid cross-linked with an oxide, acid or salt of an element in a pentavalent or hexavalent oxidation state, which element in this oxidation stage gives acids having a dissociation constant K<1.00 in 0.1 to 0.01 N aqueous solution. Preferred blasting slurry explosive compositions contain from 15 to 83 % by wt of one inorganic oxygen-supplying salt, from 10 to 30 % by wt of water, and from 0.2 to 2.5 % by wt of cross-linked Xanthomonas hydrophilic colloid wherein the cross-linking agent is used in amounts in the range 2 to 10% by wt of the colloid.
