Effects of cosurfactant on hydrocarbon solubilization in the system p-xylene/decanol/sodium octanoate/water
The effect of added alcohol on the solubility of a hydrocarbon in aqueous micellar solutions was measured. The solutions studied were sodium octanoate, p-xylene, and n-decanol. Aqueous solutions of various concentrations of surfactant and cosurfactant were titrated and mixed with the hydrocarbon. For all surfactant concentrations, the maximum amount of hydrocarbon solubilized increased linearly with the concentration of added cosurfactant. The efficacy of the cosurfactant was not constant, but depended on the amount of surfactant present. The evidence indicates that areas of phase diagrams nominally covered by a single isotropic solution can be subdivided into subregions having significantly different micellar structures. The findings were interpreted to show that for nonrod-like micelles, hydrocarbon solubilization may have little effect on the number of surfactant ions per micelle. It is additionally hypothesized that the addition of a cosurfactant may increase hydrocarbon solubilization by the mechanism of increasing the micellar size. 32 references.
