Title: World food crisis: an international directory of organizations and information resources

Book ·
OSTI ID:6765517

Providing enough food to meet the needs of an ever-increasing world population is one of the greatest challenges mankind has ever faced. Half the world's population, 2 billion people, suffers from chronic malnutrition, and at least 460 million people are actually starving--they do not get enough calories of dietary energy. What is being done about this problem, and who is doing it. This book helps to answer that question by providing in convenient reference form a central source of information about organizations concerned with the world food problem, their programs and activities, publications, and other information resources. Emphasis is on organizations of international character and those based in the United States and Canada, although some key organizations of other countries are also listed. The main focus of this book is on the food needs of poor countries. Groups interested in hunger, malnutrition, and overconsumption of food in the richer countries are listed. The world food crisis has many dimensions. Included here are organizations concerned with direct food relief, nutrition, rural development, the international food trade, research and training in agriculture and fisheries, climate change, religious and ethical questions, finance, preservation of genetic resources, soil conservation, public education, pest control, fertilizer, and alternate diets. The stress is on groups working on problems of basic foods, especially grains and fish. A companion volume, Population: An International Directory of Organizations and Information Resources (Public Affairs Clearinghouse, 1976) deals with the population aspects of the food crisis.
