Multiphoton ionization of benzene in solution

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6765298
The multiphoton ionization spectrum of benzene in a dilute solution in n-pentane has been measured for laser excitation wavelengths from 360-560 nm. The observed spectrum, from 460-560 nm, has been measured using linearly and circularly polarized light and has been ascribed to multiphoton ionization via the two-photon resonant /sup 1/B/sub 2..mu../-/sup 1/A/sub 1g/ transitions of benzene. The order of the multiphoton ionization process has been determined, and the observed resonances in the spectral region from 360-445 nm are discussed. Power measurements at 337.1 nm indicate that two photons can ionize benzene in this energy region, giving an upper limit to the ionization threshold of benzene in n-pentane of approx.7.36 eV.
