The equilibrium adsorption of hydrogen on LaNi/sub 5/ was studied and the Hill and de Boer equation was utilized to describe two mechanisms of hydrogen adsorption in LaNi/sub 5/. A schematic diagram of the apparatus used for studying equilibrium adsorption of H/sub 2/ on LaNi/sub 5/ is presented. The assembly included a metering vessel for hydrogen (1), and an adsorber (2), both volume-calibrated. 2 ..mu..m aperture size, was activated in the adsorber by three successive adsorption-desorption cycles. Desorption was effected by heating at 200/sup 0/C for 30 min accompanied by evacuation to 20 mm residual pressure, and adsorption by the action of hydrogen under 40 atm pressure. The activated LaNi/sub 5/ was outgassed, and a measured amount of hydrogen was introduced into the adsorber at a definite temperature. After establishment of equilibrium the amount of hydrogen adsorbed was calculated from the difference of pressures before and after the experiment, and a fresh portion of hydrogen was then admitted into the adsorber.
