The intrinsic degradation phenomena of LaNi/sub 5/ and LaNi/sub 4. 7/Al/sub 0. 3/ by temperature induced hydrogen absorption-desorption cycling

Journal Article · · Mater. Res. Bull.; (United States)
The effects of the thermal hydrogen absorption-desorption cycling on the intrinsic degradation of LaNi/sub 5/ and LaNi/sub 4.7/Al/sub 0.3/ were investigated through the P-C-T curve changes with cycles. LaNi/sub 5/ exhibits poor resistance for the thermal cycling (30/sup 0/C to 185/sup 0/C, P/sub H/2/sub / = 15 atm); however, LaNi/sub 4.7/Al/sub 0.3/ was found to have a good cyclic resistance (30/sup 0/C to 185/sup 0/C, P/sub H/2/sub / = 10 atm). The effect of annealing conditions for the recovery of LaNi/sub 5/ was found that the degree of recovery was dependent on annealing temperature and pressure. The degradation rate by thermal cycling after the recovery heat treatment was faster than that of fresh alloy.
