Nation's commitments deemed vital if coal is to fill the 'oil gap' in 2020

Although forecasts by the Workshop on Alternative Energy Strategies on the growth in steam coal demand for the year 2020 have been made on the basis of expected shortages of oil and a reduced contribution from nuclear energy, neither potential suppliers nor importers foresee a delivery system that will stimulate mine development. A list of potential suppliers shows large increases for the U.S., Soviet Union, and Poland, with China, Canada, and South Africa becoming new exporters. The list of importers is headed by Western Europe and Japan. Surveys of estimated coal reserves indicate coal will be available for several centuries, although the financial commitment and recovery problems will be extensive. Poland's experience illustrates the problem of coordinating mines, transportation systems, and commercial markets and points up the worldwide effort that is needed.
