The author presents observations on Japan's oil sector outlook. According to this analysis, the decoupling of economic growth from energy demand experienced in Japan during the last decade has been reversed, ending the repeated downward revisions in the forecasts of the country's long-term energy balances. Low oil prices will boost economic growth worldwide, increasing domestic and export demand for Japanese manufactured goods. Low oil prices will also lead to increased demand for transportation and other consumer fuels. Substitution back to oil will continue in dual-fired or existing idle oil-fired capacity in electricity generation and industry. Coal is more likely to be backed out than natural gas, largely for environmental reasons.
