Long path FTIR spectroscopic study of the reactions of CF[sub 3]O radicals with ethane and propane

A long path FTIR-based product study was carried out by the visible ([lambda] > 400 nm) photolysis of mixtures containing CF[sub 3]NO, NO and ethane or propane (in mtorr range) in 700 torr of synthetic air at 297 [plus minus] 2 K. Kinetic and spectroscopic evidence has been obtained for the reaction (1), CF[sub 3]O + RH [yields] CF[sub 3]OH + R (RH = C[sub 2]H[sub 6] or C[sub 3]H[sub 8]). Using the reaction (2), CF[sub 3]O + NO [yields] CF[sub 2]O + FNO as the reference reaction, values for the relative rate constants k[sub 2]/k[sub 1] were determined to be 50 [plus minus] 15([sigma]) and 20 [plus minus] 5([sigma]) for C[sub 2]H[sub 6] and C[sub 3]H[sub 8], respectively. These results suggest that the hydrocarbon reactions may provide a significant pathway for the tropospheric degradation of HFCs and HCFCs containing a CF[sub 3] group. 15 refs., 6 figs., 1 tab.
