Thermal conductivity of bulk oxide fuels (LWBR Development Program)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6757276
Data are reported on the thermal conductivity of the oxide fuels ThO/sub 2/, ThO/sub 2/-UO/sub 2/, ZrO/sub 2/-UO/sub 2/, ZrO/sub 2/-UO/sub 2/-CaO, and UO/sub 2/ prepared by various ceramic fabrication techniques. The thermal conductivity of low-density bodies was found to be highly dependent on the fabrication technique and, therefore, resulting pore structure; a computer simulation of porous bodies was successful in reproducing the measured sensitivity to pore shape. Factors affecting the thermal conductivity of irradiated fuel bodies are reviewed, and a relation between conductivity, porosity, depletion level, and temperature is proposed for various oxide fuels.
