Industrial application of fluidized-bed cogeneration system

The paper describes in detail the cogeneration facility based on a coal-fired atmospheric fluidised-bed boiler designed by Foster Wheeler for Shell's Europort Tank Farm near Rotterdam. The boiler supplies high-pressure steam to a turbine generating 6.6 MW of electricity. The back-pressure steam is fed to heat exchangers which provide 37 MW of thermal energy to the tank farm. The boiler can burn high-sulphur coal in an environmentally acceptable manner, and the application of cogeneration techniques can produce overall cycle efficiencies of up to 80%.
