This paper is concerned with the equipment corrosion in process units in petroleum refineries and petrochemical plants which is one of the main obstacles to extension of the operating runs between maintenance shutdowns and reductions in the volume and cost of maintenance operations. Of the modern process units in refineries, the most susceptibile to severe corrosion are the primary crude oil distillation units, either atmospheric or atmospheric/vacuum pipestills, in which the condensers and coolers are attacked very severely. In primary crude oil distillation units, effective corrosion control requires not only the use of corrosion-resistant materials, but also a set of chemical engineering measures, including thorough desalting of the crude. The introduction of neutralizing agents such as caustic solution, ammonia water, or copper/ammonia complex; and the use of filming corrosion inhibitors. Various corrosion inhibitors used in petroleum refineries and petrochemical plants are reviewed and their effectiveness evaluated. Particular attention is given to the corrosion protection of water coolers and condensers. Economic aspects of the use of corrosion inhibitors are also considered. 9 refs.
