Measurement of neutron spatial distribution in a water moderated, thorium oxide rod lattice (LWBR Development Program)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6747322
A large lattice of Zircaloy-4 rods filled with ThO/sub 2/ pellets and completely submersed in water was used to test the cross sections of ThO/sub 2/, H/sub 2/, and Zr. The spontaneous fissions from 5 micrograms of /sup 252/Cf provided the source neutrons. Cd covered In foils within the rods detected the neutrons up to 35 centimeters from the source. The measured foil activations were subsequently modified to correspond to activations by the main 1.458-ev indium resonance alone. This measured distribution was then compared to the predictions of a 3-D Monte Carlo calculation. As the distance from the source increased, the measured distribution decreased significantly slower than the Monte Carlo predicted distribution. 31 references. (NSA 24: 18783)
