In order to obtain design information of Zircaloy-4 tubing, an extensive test program was carried out which included as materials variables the fabrication method, grain size, and cold-work, and as test variables temperature and time. The test included conventional longitudinal tensile tests as well as internal and external pressure tests to more nearly simulate service loading conditions, biaxial tests to determine the degree of anisotropy present, and ring tests to obtain transverse properties. Physical properties investigated included corrosion rates (and concomitant hydrogen pickup), crystallographic texture, hydride distribution, and annealing kinetics. Results include the following: a determination of the effect of texture on hydride orientation and on the variation of yield strength with loading condition, proof that the improvement in properties conferred by cold-work is not retained under low stress creep conditions, and proof that cold-work hardening and irradiation hardening are not additive in all cases.
