Plane-stress yield loci for Zircaloy-4 tubing, estimated from Knoop hardness (LWBR Development Program)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6747257
The plane-stress yield loci of five Zircaloy-4 tubing lots, varying in both texture and heat-treatment condition, were determined from Knoop microhardness measurements made in the two principal directions of each of the three orthogonal surfaces. The Knoop data were normalized to two differently determined theoretical first-quadrant loci (one based on the pressure-burst yield stress, and the other based on the approximation P = 1.7R, where R and P are the longitudinal and transverse contractile strain ratios). For these materials in which R varied from 0.76 to 2.8, it was concluded that the Knoop hardness flow surface for tubing of comparable heat-treatment condition was sensitive to a change in texture (increase in R value) and indicated the expected texture hardening under combined tension or compression loading.
