The accident at Three Mile Island resulted in severe damage to a nuclear reactor. In spite of its seriousness, no immediate death or injury occurred and its long term health effects appear to be minimal - it was not a catastrophe. This accident was essentially a result of human factors and not due to any basic flaws in the safety of nuclear power plants. It has heightened awareness of reactor safety issues in the US, Canada and the world in general, further decreasing the already low risks posed by this energy source. TMI's major impact on energy supply was in the US where its effect has been to significantly worsen an already serious energy situation.
