Three Mile Island (TMI) was the first serious reactor accident in the history of commercial nuclear power. At the time, many asserted that it only proved the efficacy of safety systems, and that it would not happen again. Although Chernobyl proved them wrong, TMI did have far-reaching effects-primarily, it increased the public`s distrust of nuclear power, it spurred improvements in safety at nuclear plants, and it contributed to a substantial reduction in the planned role of nuclear power.
