Purification of coal tar

Journal Article · · Coke Chem. USSR (Engl. Transl.); (United States)

Although coal tar quality is deteriorating, most coking plants in USSR still prepare it for processing by the inefficient and low-output settling method. Since tar compositions are so complex and their properties are so variable, each plant has to approach purification from an individual standpoint. A review is presented of the most promising tar purification methods at present: use of diluents; washing with liquors; vibro-filtration; and centrifugation. Experiences with complex purification schemes developed in USSR using a combination of these methods is also discussed. 27 references, 1 table.
