Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and other carcinogenic substances are released to the environment with the combustion of coal. The presence of heterocyclic carcinogenic compounds in coal, soot, and emissions is discussed. Sulfur dioxide, particulates, and benzo-a-pyrene also promote cancer. Additional epidemiological studies are required to investigate these relationships. (2 diagrams, 2 graphs, 98 references, 17 tables)
