Title: Luminescence of Eu sup 2+ in strontium and barium thiogallates

Journal Article · · Journal of Solid State Chemistry; (USA)

Solid state investigation of the MS-Ga{sub 2}S{sub 3} systems (M = Sr, Ba) gives evidence of the existence of the following thiogallates: SrGa{sub 2}S{sub 4}, Sr{sub 2}Ga{sub 2}S{sub 5}, BaGa{sub 4}S{sub 4}, Ba{sub 2}Ga{sub 2}S{sub 6}, Ba{sub 4}Ga{sub 2}S{sub 7}, and Ba{sub 5}(GaS{sub 4}){sub 2}. When substituted for the alkaline earth, Eu{sup 2+} shows an emission in most host lattices. The emission band shifts to longer wavelengths with increasing M/Ga atomic ratio of the host lattice. For most thiogallates, despite low phonon energies and small Stokes shifts, quenching of the Eu{sup 2+} emission starts below 300 K. Reasons for such behaviors are discussed.
