Shell-Esso boosts Spar throughput in Brent field
The throughput of Shell-Esso's 300,000 bbl Spar floating storage and loading buoy in Brent field in the U.K. North Sea has been increased from 100,000 to 250,000 bbl/day to handle the growing production of the field and delays in switching from tanker loading to the pipeline system to Sullom Voe terminal. Upgrading of Spar was achieved by bypassing the buoy's storage system and loading directly into two Shell and two Esso tankers that run a shuttle service to the field. Spar, which floats in 459 ft of water, has been able to work in seas as high as 25 ft and wind speeds of 40 knots. According to Shell, once pipeline operations begin, Spar will be retained for use as an alternative means of transport in case of any problems on the line or insufficient capacity of the Brent system.
