Preheated coal operations at Redcar coke ovens

A preheated pipeline-charged coke-oven battery was built at Redcar to produce high-quality coke for the 14m blast furnace. Major difficulties were experienced from the time of commissioning. Problems with charge rate/weight control, coal profile, charge main blockages and blocked ascension pipes caused severe pressure surges on oven frames and doors. This reduced oven availability, and together with high oven centre pressures, variable bulk density and heating problems, caused oven wall distortion. Most of these were eventually controlled, before the onset of wall failure necessitated closure of the plant. The problems experienced, modifications made and problems remaining are described. The rebuilt ovens will be wet charged.
