Reactions connecting autoxidation with oxy radical production, lipid peroxidation, and cytotoxicity

A comprehensive scheme of autoxidative cytotoxicity is presented. Clarification of the direct reactions of O/sub 2//sup -/ and H/sub 2/O with lipids and new evidence for copper-dependent catalysis of OH production is taken into account. The question is raised as to whether metal-independent reaction of H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ might be significant in vivo. Emphasis is placed on the likely modes of propagating cytotoxicity at a distance.
