Rapid field test for trace lead in unleaded gasoline (colorimetric method)

A field test method is described for the determination of small amounts of lead in unleaded gasoline. The sample of gasoline is treated with iodine and tetraethyl ammonium chloride in chloroform and subjected to ultraviolet light. The lead alkyls are removed from the gasoline by extraction with an aqueous ammonium nitrate solution. After extraction, the aqueous phase is filtered into a solution of 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol disodium salt (PAR) and ammonium hydroxide. The lead-PAR complex is measured colorimetrically at 490 nm, and the lead is determined from a previously established calibration curve. The method is applicable to the measurement of lead in the range from 0.01 to 0.10 g Pb/U.S. gal (2.64 to 26.4 mg Pb/l).
