On the basis of a comparison of calculated data on the frequency shifts of a laser stabilized by saturated absorption in iodine: data obtained by allowing for collisions in iodine vapor under different approximations with experimental data: we have refined the mechanism of formation of collisional asymmetry of iodine peaks of saturated absorption and the profile shape of the peaks. The best agreement is obtained for the profile whose antisymmetric component has a dispersion shape, and whose symmetric component differs appreciably from the Lorentzian shape in that it has a sharper top. The main contribution to the asymmetry is made by elastic collisions with a large scattering angle. The sharpening of the top of the peak may be due to strong saturation of the absorption of the Gaussian beam and possibly also to the slow-molecule effect.
