Production of deuterons in high-energy hadron collisions with nuclei in the target-fragmentation region

Production of deuterons in irradiation of nuclear targets by high-energy hadrons is considered. We study the production of deuterons belonging to the fragmentation region of the target nucleus, with momenta much larger than the characteristic nuclear momenta (i.e., outside the so-called evaporation region). The cross sections for production of deuterons are calculated for emission of the deuterons into both the forward and backward (cumulative region) hemispheres. It is shown that the main mechanism is direct fusion of weakly virtual nucleons into the deuteron. The influence of the hard and soft (in the nuclear potential) rescatterings on the formation of the deuteron is analyzed. Comparison of the calculated cross sections with the experimental data in a large region of angles and momenta is performed.
