Prestressed concrete tanks for liquid natural gas tankers

Preload Technology, Inc.'s tank design for LNG tankers offers important safety features and cost savings by using prestressed concrete and modular units to use cargo space more efficiently, eliminate secondary barriers, and allow rapid construction at the shipbuilding site or at a removed fitting-out site. The tank is constructed of a series of axially prestressed concrete modular wall sections with a steel sheath anchored to them to provide a secondary barrier against LNG leakage. The modular wall sections are separated by concrete or steel stiffening disks. The tank is formed by alternately positioning a number of modular wall sections and stiffening disks. The structure is further stiffened by flat concrete stiffening plates which are integral with the modular wall sections and positioned radially and axially within the tanks. The tank is supported on the annular stiffening disks, which are joined to the tank wall.
