The diffractive dissociation NN..-->..N(N..pi..) is studied for large masses of the excited N..pi.. system (above the resonances) on the basis of the theory of complex angular momenta. The one-pion Regge-pole exchange amplitude is used as the primary amplitude. Rescattering and the nucleon spin are taken into account. The model is compared with Fermilab and ISR experimental data and found to give a satisfactory description of the basic characteristics : the energy dependence of the cross section, the mass distribution of the excited system, the momentum-transfer distribution, and the angular distributions in the c.m. frame of the excited N..pi.. system in the region z/sub t/>0, where z/sub t/ is the cosine of the Gottfried--Jackson angle in the c.m. frame of the excited system. Several qualitative effects of rescattering are discussed.
