Physicochemical methods have been used in investigating Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-CoO-MoO/sub 3/ catalysts of various compositions after carrying out the reaction of thiophene hydrodesulfurization. It is suggested that the active components in the Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-CoO-MoO/sub 3/ catalysts with high Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ contents are located on the surface of the support in the form of microcrystals or clusters; the proposed model is that of a cluster on the surface of the support in commercial Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-CoO-MoO/sub 3/ catalyst. It is shown that, under the conditions of reaction, the original oxides and molybdates of Al and Co are reduced and sulfided to form sulfides and oxysulfides. The Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ support retards the reduction of the sulfided forms quite considerably. The active component of commercial Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-CoO-MoO/sub 3/ catalyst is a product of partial sulfurization of CoMoO/sub 4/ (cobalt molybdate oxysulfide).
