The hydrodesulfurization of heavy petroleum feedstocks and coal-derived liquids requires conversion of high-molecular-weight compounds like dibenzothiophene and benzonaphthothiophene. The reactivities of these compounds are poorly known, and the reported studies with various catalysts operated under various temperatures, pressures, and reaction environments fail to provide a consistent pattern. The experiments reported here were carried out systematically to establish the reactivities of thiophene, benzo(b)thiophene, dibenzothiophene, and benzo(b)naphtho(2,3-d)thiophene at a high pressure (71 atm), representative of industrial practice. The experiments were done with an autoclave reactor containing suspended particles of a standard commercial hydrodesulfurization catalyst, sulfided CoO-MoO/sub 3//..gamma..-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/.
