Systematic studies were made to establish the reactivities of thiphene, benzo(b)thiphene, dibenzothiophene, and benzo(b)naphthol(2, 3-d)thiophene at a high pressure (71 atm) representative of industrial practice. The experiments were done with an autoclave reactor containing suspended particles of a standard commercial hydrodesulfurization catalyst, sulfided CoO-MoO/sub 3//..gamma..-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/. The rate constants are tabulated and show that the reactivity sharply decreases as the number of rings in the reactant decreases from 1 to 3, but the four-ring compound is slightly more reactive than the three-ring compound. These results indicate that dibenzothiophene as the reactant most in need of study as it may be considered a representative compound for heavy petroleum feedstocks and coal-derived liquids. (JSR)
