The method of intersecting atomic and modulated electron beams was used to measure the total excitation cross sections of the 4/sup 3/P/sub 0,1,2/ metastable states of calcium by electron impact in the range of electron energies from the excitation threshold to 20 eV, with an electron energy spread of the order of 1 eV. The calcium atoms in metastable states were detected by the method of resonance fluorescence, excited with a single-frequency laser using an R6G dye. The absolute excitation cross sections of the 4/sup 3/P/sub 0,1,2/ states of calcium at the maximum of the excitation function (approx. =4 eV) are 1.3 x 10/sup -16/, 3.3 x 10/sup -16/, 5.9 x 10/sup -16/ cm/sup 2/, respectively. The relative measurement error did not exceed +- 30%. Results are compared with available experimental and theoretical data.
