Effective cross sections for electron-impact excitation of spectral transitions from the metastable 4{sup 3}P{sub 0.2} states in calcium atoms

Using the optical method and crossed electron and atomic beam technique, the effective excitation cross sections and their energy dependences (up to 30 eV) are determined for the metastable 4{sup 3}P{sub 0.2} states of calcium atoms. The largest excitation cross sections were observed for the first members of the sharp (4{sup 3}P{sub 2}-5{sup 3}S{sub 1}) and diffuse (4{sup 3}P{sub 2}-4{sup 3}D{sub j}) series, whose respective magnitudes at 30 eV are 9 x 10{sup -16} cm{sup 2} and 2 x 10{sup -16} cm{sup 2}. The {sup 3}P{sub j} and {sup 3}D{sub j} shifted terms of the two-electron excitation p{sup 2}, dp, and d{sup 2} configurations were found to be excited rather efficiently from the metastable states. The behavior of the energy dependences of the excitation cross sections for the spectral transitions from the metastable states is explained. 8 refs., 5 figs., 1 tab.
