The March 17 hearing examined the budget requests for the DOE fossil-energy and environmental programs and included statements by George Fumich, Jr. Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy and Ruth Clusen, Secretary. for Environment. the March 20 hearing examined the Office of Conservation and Solar Programs with statements, by Dr. Bennett Miller, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Solar Energy (designate) and Dr. Maxine Savitz, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Conservation. On March 24, the hearings ranged over a broad set of topics in the R and D area, with statements by Dr. Ruth M. Davis, Assistant Secretary, Resource Applications, plus several from her staff; by Dr. Nelson D. Dewitt, Deputy Director, Office of Energy Research, assisted by several OER colleagues; and by Duane C. Sewell, Assistant Secretary of Defense Programs, accompanied by Richard Schriever, Deputy Director, Office of Inertial Fusion, and Eugene Beckett, Waste Isolation Project leader. The April 1 hearing was devoted to testimony from nongovernmental officials expressing their views on the DOE budget for FY 1981. On April 21, programs under the Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy were examined. Sen. Church (Idaho), presiding, expressed grave concern over the trend in the DOE nuclear energy programs for the past 3 years, fearing we are on the verge of losing many important future energy options; he opined that the subcommittee members would try to comprehend the rationale that DOE offers in support of the major curtailments on practically all fronts of nuclear energy The testimony was by George W. Cunningham, Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy, who submitted a lengthy, detailed formal statement for the record.
