U.S. industry used $314-$325 million worth of chemical-processing catalysts in 1978. This includes (in millions of dollars) $23.00 for steam reforming; $6.1 for ammonia and methanol synthesis; $23.5 for hydrogenation; $5.3 for dehydrogenation, including $0.40 for butadiene and $4.90 for styrene; $56.82-$61.42 for oxidation, including $19-$23 for ethylene oxide, $17.1 for nitric acid, $3.40 for sulfuric acid, $2.4-$3.0 for maleic anhydride, and $3.2-$3.3 for phthalic anhydride; $10.4 for ammoxidation (acrylonitrile from propylene); $1.26 for oxychlorination (ethylene dichloride); $89.83 for organic synthesis, including $8.40 for cumene, propylene trimer and tetramer, and polymer gasoline; and $109.90-$115.90 for polymerization, including $50.0-$55.0 for Ziegler-Natta processing, $1.00 for polyethylene (Phillips), $17-$18 for low-density polyethylene, $17.50 for PVC, $3.40 for polystyrene, and $21.00 for urethanes. The U.S. and Japanese markets for chemical-processing catalysts and 23 major U.S. producers of chemical- and petroleum-processing catalysts are individually discussed.
