Resonant matching of electromagnetic waves with an inhomogeneous magnetized plasma

The absorption without reflection of an extraordinary wave in an inhomogeneous region in a magnetized plasma is studied. The absorption results from energy dissipation at the upper hybrid resonance, and the matching results from the excitation of a waveguide mode in the transmission band beyond the resonance region. The effect occurs even in the case of normal incidence, in contrast with the situation in an isotropic plasma; the corresponding waveguide degenerates to simply a Fabry--Perot resonator with an absorbing wall. For this latter case, some specific examples of reflectionless distributions are given. These distributions are found through a computer integration of the equation for the transverse plasma impedance.
