Resonant matching of electromagnetic waves with an inhomogeneous and isotropic plasma

The resonant absorption of electromagnetic waves in an inhomogeneous and isotropic plasma without reflection is studied. The effect occurs when a p-polarized electromagnetic wave is incident on a plasma slab in which the density increases monotonically (parabolically) in the plasma-resonance region. The absorption itself is due to energy dissipation in this region, while the matching is due to the excitation of a mode which is approximately confined to this region. Specific examples are given of smooth, monotonic, reflector-free profiles from computer calculations. The possibility of generalizing the results to broader classes of media and fields is discussed.
