Alcohol Fuels option in the Third World

Journal Article · · Energy J.; (United States)
Energy planners in developing areas are increasingly interested in the possibility of using either ethanol or methanol fuels as a substitute for gasoline refined from imported oil. Alcohol fuels in some countries are approaching equality with gasoline costs, and in some cases they may already be lower. The factors used in the production of field crops, however, may respond to a large-scale alcohol program in such a way as to raise costs to uncomfortable levels, both for alcohol itself and for food and feed products. Limitations on land and other agricultural resources thus encourage an emphasis on forest crops, rather than grains and starches, as feedstock for alcohol fuels. 12 references.
