Large magnetic perturbation and solitons in superfluid /sup 3/He-A

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. B: Condens. Matter; (United States)
Two experiments on solitons in superfluid /sup 3/He-A are considered. First, a sudden change in the strength of the applied magnetic field ..delta..H>>..cap omega../..gamma.., where ..cap omega.. is the Leggett frequency, is shown to send away the d texture associated with the composite soliton, generating a pair of magnetic pulses traveling in the opposite directions with spin-wave velocities. Second, a tipping experiment in the presence of the composite soliton is considered. In particular, limiting to the case of the twist soliton, the shift in the magnetization precession frequency is calculated as a function of the tipping angle, theta. The theoretical results seem to describe the observed theta dependence quite well if a necessary change to go from the twist soliton to the splay soliton is incorporated. Furthermore, the soliton becomes intrinsically unstable for theta> or =1/2.
