How Westcoast meets two-phase flow problems

The gathering system of Westcoast Transmission Co. in British Columbia handles our gas, wet with both water and hydrocarbon liquids; it was designed for 2-phase flow. In order to decrease pigging frequency and increase liquid recovery, 2 pipeline bypasses, more than a mile in length, have been laid to handle pigged liquid slugs. In order to protect this gathering system from the effects of the sour wet gas, an inhibitor injection was begun immediately. All lines were precoated with a mixture of diesel oil and inhibitor, before going into sour gas service. In cold weather, a complicated water problem, together with intermittent flow and condensate, causes excess liquid to gather in pipeline sags. Frequent pigging of the gathering lines is necessary to remove the accumulated fluid. The pigging operations are described in detail.
