Ballooning effect in flute waves and stability boundaries of a plasma in an axisymmetric tandem mirror system

The plasma in a tandem missor system may be stable with respect to flute waves even if there is axial symmetry (if there is no min B). The reason for the stabilization is that the instability is caused by the effect of the magnetic-field curvature primarily on the high-energy ions of the outer mirrors, and the ''cold'' ions of the central section are also involved in the oscillation. The inertia of these ions reduces the growth rate. It is shown that in a dense plasma, with electromagnetic perturbations, only some of the ions of the central section participate in the oscillation because of the ballooning effect, and stability is attained at low values of ..beta...
