Demand for electric energy in the United States

An econometric approach is used in this paper in an effort to explain the 1974 and 1975 growth in kilowatt-hour sales of electric energy in the United States. After development of a demand model and discussion of the estimating technique (Zellner's seemingly unrelated regression technique), monthly data covering the period January 1971 through December 1975 for the aggregate United States are used to estimate the model. The results indicate that the principal determinants of essentially zero growth in 1974 were large price increases coupled with conservation efforts. In 1975 the small growth in total sales resulted from the decline in sales to the industrial sector that came about because of large price increases and the depressed level of economic activity. 13 references.
