Factor demand and energy substitution in US regional manufacturing industries

The overall objective of this study was to compare the directions and magnitudes of the interplay among factors of production employed by manufacturing industries in the East North Central and the West South Central regions. The specific objectives for each of eight two-digit SIC industry groups were the estimation of elasticities of substitution among inputs as well as computation of the corresponding price elasticities of demand. The regions were chosen in order to highlight the local nature of adjustments to a changing energy environment. With data covering 1964-1977, two factor demand models were formulated and the parameter estimates computed through the iterative Zellner two-stage Aitken generalized least-squares procedure for systems of seemingly unrelated regressions. Two of three major findings were capital-energy substitutability across models and regions and purchased fuels-electrical energy complementarity in some industries, especially those in the West Central region.
