A $300 investment in energy-system adjustments and modifications lowered the Springfield, Illinois McFarland Mental Health Center's electricity use by 13.5% and its gas use 16.3%, for a saving of $64,000 in energy costs. The center was the first to go through the State Buildings Energy Program (SBEP) for conserving energy in state buildings. The program begins with an audit, the data from which are compiled into suggested measures for improving the efficiency of building systems. The second step is to calculate from past consumption patterns the amount of money that was saved by adopting the recommended measures. Most of the measures consisted of fine-tuning thermostats and performing boiler and other equipment maintenance.
