Low-temperature synthesis of ZrW{sub 2}O{sub 8} and Mo-substituted ZrW{sub 2}O{sub 8}

A low-temperature synthesis of ZrW{sub 2}O{sub 8} and HfW{sub 2}O{sub 8} has been developed which yields the normal crystalline forms of these compounds at a temperature where they are presumably not thermodynamically stable. This same synthesis approach has allowed for the first time the synthesis of cubic ZrW{sub 2{minus}x}Mo{sub x}O{sub 8} phases up to x = 1.5.
