Prudhoe Bay field, cloaked in mystery for months, has finally emerged as a giant estimated to cover at least 430,000 acres with 3 overlapping oil pools. The general Prudhoe Bay area, at this time, appears to have 2 distinct fields. They are the multipool Prudhoe Bay field and one some 6 miles west tapped by the 1 Ugnu discovery of Atlantic Richfield Co. and BP Alaska in 22-12n-9e. Prudhoe Bay field appears to extend about 40 miles east-west and 20 miles north- south. The structure, a broad anticlinal nose, plunges approx. west-northwest. Its main Triassic pay, the Prudhoe Bay sand pool is found between 8,100 and 8,680 ft. The sands cover about 368,640 acres--or about 85% of the total field area. Flow rates for wells completed in the thickest part of the main Prudhoe Bay area are expected to be at least 10,000 bpd. Wells tapping the shallower Kuparuk River pool are expected to be in the 1,000 bpd range.
