Method of cutting a notch in an underground formation penetrated by a well

This is a method of hydraulically cutting a notch in a subsurface formation penetrated by a well for the initiation of a fracture. A high-velocity stream of a cutting fluid is discharged from a nozzle to cut a circumferential opening in the casing wall. This opening has a width at least 4 times the diameter of the nozzle at the desired depth. Thereafter the nozzle is centered opposite the circumferential opening and a high-velocity stream of a cutting fluid is directed through the opening in the casing to cut a notch in the formation. The nozzle is rotated about a vertical axis and in a horizontal plant so as to direct the high-velocity stream through the opening while discharging the high- velocity stream of cutting fluid from the nozzle.
