US energy officials are looking The People's Republic of China for new ways to burn low-grade fuels. The Chinese were driven to develop alternative fluidized bed combustion technologies because of transportation problems with the movement of quality coal. As industrial power needs grew, the Chinese developed FBC systems to burn lower-grade fuels, such as lignites, oil shale, coal washing rejects, and stone-like coal. Now that US industry has become interested in burning a range of fuels and lower-grade fuels, DOE has taken steps to establish a scientific exchange protocol with China. Chinese FBC boilers range from those with steam capacity of 130 tons/hr in large industrial plants down to 0.2 tons/hr for space heaters. The design of the FBC boilers is included.
